Michael Hayden Phipps, 67, a retired hardware engineer, died Saturday, Oct. 9, at his home. He was the husband of Patricia Ann Phipps.

He was born in Wichita, Kan., on Aug. 23, 1937, and moved to the western section of Los Angeles when he was five.

From 1956 until 1963, Mr. Phipps served a tour of duty in the U.S. Air Force. He was transferred to New England, where he remained the rest of his life.

He worked as a hardware engineer for Digital Equipment Corp. for 25 years and then with Intel Corp. for five years. He retired in September 2002.

He was a member of the Grace Baptist Church and enjoyed canoeing and kayaking in Plymouth, N.H., during the summer.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his four children, Kathleen Phipps of Marlboro, James Phipps of St. Petersburg, Fla., Jennifer Farragher of Revere and Melissa Patnaude of Pepperell; five stepchildren, Suzanne Cutts of San Francisco, Robert Cutts, Sharon Metras, Katherine Parker and Daniel Parker, all of Pepperell; and 13 grandchildren.

He was also the father of the late Dennis Phipps.
