August Koerner was born on July 7, 1843, in Germany. He immigrated with his family to the US in 1858.

He married Catherine "Katie" McGannon, from Indiana, about 1865. There is no MN marriage record. According to the 1900 US Census, they were the parents of six children, three living. Their youngest daughter, Pauline, was still living with them.

August was a prominent member of Meeker County and served in public office for many years. He was a Mason and member of the GAR in Litchfield.
