An immigrant from County Waterford, Ireland, Anastasia Tobin married James Segrue, who had immigrated from County Kerry as a child, on 20 August 1857 at St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church in New Orleans. The archives of the Archdiocese of New Orleans indicate they received their marriage license from a Justice of the Peace. The couple had five children before Ann's untimely death. These were Stephen Edward Segrue (1858-1901), James Thomas (b. 1860 and died as an adult), Anna (b. 1861 and d. before 1868), Mary (b. 1866, d. unknown), and Anastasia (b. and d. in 1868).

Anastasia's exact date and place of birth, and her parents' names or whether they too immigrated to New Orleans, remain unknown. The marriage records indicates Ann was from County Waterford. There are no Tobins in any New Orleans parish records up to 1839, so Ann did not immigrate before then.

The 1860 census shows the Segrue family living with two sons (Stephen and Thomas) at home. James Segrue was then a fireman for the railroad. Also living with the family is James' brother John Thomas and his young wife Mary. John subsequently enlisted in the 6th LA and died on 1 July 1862 at the Battle of Malvern Hill. James did not serve as a soldier because he worked for the railroad, which was then supplying troops and equipment to Camp Moore, LA.

Anastasia's civil death record says she died at home, at the corner of Clara and Erato Streets, District 1, New Orleans. Her husband, witness to her death, filed the death papers that day. Their last child, also named Anastasia, had been born only a week or two before and died on June 6 of the same year. Between these two catastrophic events, James Segrue achieved naturalization, on 8 April 1868.
