The Webb family resided on the headwaters of Spring Creek in the southern part of Overton County. Daniel Webb was one of the pioneer settlers of that section and a successful farmer and was held in high esteem. He had reared an interesting family, giving them fair advantages for an education and they were every one otherwise intelligent. They were all intensely southern and cast their lot with the Confederacy in 1861. Two sons, John and Thomas, volunteered early in the Confederate Army, serving in Company F, 13th (Gore's) Tennessee Cavalry. At the Battle of Saltville, Virginia in 1864, while fighting at close range, John Webb fell mortally wounded, and Thomas Webb, his brother being by his side shot and killed the soldier who had shot John Webb. Thomas was shot through during the progress of the battle but survived the war, dying several years after he had come home.
