Charlotte Ann Woods-Burwell was born on January 7, 1932, in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, to Beauford Williams and Josephine Gaines Williams.

She and her younger brother, Beauford T. Williams, both attended Central High School, where Charlotte excelled in history and speech.

Politically active for much of her life, Charlotte was deeply involved in the Democratic Party at the local and state levels. In 1964, she was the first Black woman nominated to run for the Indiana state legislature. She was also a hostess at The White House for the 1965 inaugural ball festivities for Lyndon B. Johnson.

Charlotte then moved to upstate New York with her husband, Parnell L. Woods Sr., where she lived for more than twenty years and raised her four children, Beauford (BK), Brenda, Parnell, and Jeffry.

She owned and operated a cocktail lounge, Charlotte's Lounge, and was a fixture at Peg Leg Bates Country Club, where she created a large extended family.

Upon returning to Ft. Wayne in 1988 to help care for her parents, Charlotte worked at voter registration.

In 1994, She married Lawrence C. Burwell and returned to upstate New York, this time to Albany, where she lived until his death. She then relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2007.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence C. Burwell; her father, mother, and brother; her son-in-law David A. Coleman Sr.; her nephew Michael Williams; and her oldest son, BK.

She is survived by: her children Brenda K. (David) Coleman of Concord, NC; son Parnell L. Woods Jr. of Grapevine, TX; son Jeffry C. (Racquel) Woods of Indianapolis, IN; beloved cousin Mary "Flo" Barry of Montgomery, AL; seven grandchildren, Summer, Kenyetta, David Jr., Janelle (Cody), Laci, Clayton, and Trey; seven great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, and beloved friends she considered family left to cherish her memory.

Charlotte was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her zest for life, endless curiosity, sense of adventure, faith, and optimism, will be sorely missed.

The family will receive friends at 1 pm, Saturday, April 21, in the Sanctuary of Greater Vision UMC, 11901 Eastfield Rd, Huntersville.

The Celebration of Life Service will be at 2 pm with burial following at Northlake Memorial Gardens.
