Claude L. Green, age 80, of 218 9th St. SW, Huron, formerly of Yale, SD, died Friday, July 10, 2009, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.

His Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron with burial at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Yale.

Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. on Monday, July 13, at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 5-7 p.m., and a Devotional Service at 7 p.m. Monday night; or one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Claude Green began his heavenly life on July 10. Claude was born on June 20, 1929, to George and Julia Green in Huron, SD. He spent a happy childhood with his sister and four brothers. He graduated from Huron High School in 1947 and attended Telegraphers School in Minneapolis from 1948-1949. He was employed by the Great Northern Railroad. He was called to serve his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1953. He met Marlys Holzerland in Watertown. They were married on April 25, 1954, and celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary this year.

After living for one year in Watertown they moved to Yale, SD, where they bought the Funk Lumber Company and changed the name to the Yale Lumber Company. He was trained in the lumber business by his father who operated the George C. Green and Sons Lumber Company in Huron. The lumberyard was never closed as he went to help customers whenever they called at the house.

Claude dearly loved Yale and he worked all his life to make it a good place to live and raise a family. He was instrumental in planning the first sewer system with Otto Ziegeldorf. When the town had many young children he started movie night for them getting Disney movies to show on a big screen downtown. He organized huge hunts for jackrabbits which sometimes bagged as many as 2000 or more rabbits. He greatly enjoyed pheasant hunting and guiding the out of state hunters who stayed at their house for many seasons. Any chance he got he would sneak away to fish at Bartons Dam and the Missouri River in his Lund boat. He and his faithful black lab Penny hunted the abundant wildlife of South Dakota. Hunting deer and antelope was an annual event. He made sure his girls fulfilled one of their childhood dreams of having horses, and took them to many 4-H horse shows. He made sure he attended his boys basketball and baseball games and taught them to love to hunt also.

Claude was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Yale and served as treasurer for many decades. The Yale Lumber Yard went out of business in 1987, and he went to work at Farmers Cashway in Huron. In May 2008 Claude and Marlys sold their house and moved into Huron. They joined Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church when the Yale church closed.

Thankful for sharing his life are his wife Marlys; children Claudia (Russ) Scotter, Cresbard, SD, Cindy (Jeff) Burich, Sturgis, SD, Curt Green, Sioux City, IA, and Mary Sue Green, Fairmont, MN; Craig (Connie) Green, Aberdeen; grandchildren, Deirdre and Micah Scotter, Sarah, Lucas, Aaron, Hannah, and Mariah Green, and Savannah Green; brother Don (Lynn) Green, Huron; sister Marion Hatfield, CA; sisters-in-law, Maxine and Melva Green; brother-in-law, Arnold (Barbara) Holzerland, MO; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Dale, Harold, and Wayne Green.

The family requests that memorials be made in Claude's name to the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church.
