The ailment which caused the death of Mrs. J. W. Bartlett in Moline had a strange origin. The Republican says that on Sunday, October 4th, Mrs. Bartlett was seized with a sharp and piercing pain while preparing for church. Dr. Dunn was called and found the symptoms indicating neuralgia of the stomach. But all remedies applied failed in their intended mission and after an unavailing effort to furnish relief Dr. Davison was called in consultation. Previous to this time a gathering of matter had formed on the right side directly over the liver. The two physicians injected morphine into the side, but this did not ease the excruciating prin. On Friday before her death a consultation of Drs. Truesdale, Davison and Dunn was held, and the disease was pronounced abscess of the liver. The physicians at this time held out hopes of recovery, but when on the evening of that day nearly a pint of blood was raised the gravest apprehensions were aroused. This was followed by a hemorrhage and an unconscious state from which she did not rally. During the entire time of her illness not a morsel of solid food was taken into the stomach.

The origin of the ailment is explained in this wise: Several days before she experienced discomfort she was engaged in slicing cold beef, and placing a piece in her mouth it slipped down without chewing. It was as large as the end of the thumb, and the belief is expressed that it lodged in the passage below the stomach and caused the gathering on her side. Mrs. Bartlett was apprehensive at the time that it would cause her trouble.

Mrs. Bartlett was greatly respected in Moline society. Having no children of her own, she adopted three orphans and reared them from early childhood to youth - and they are left with the husband.
