Mrs. Ruth S. Mitchell, 97, of Williamsport, died Tuesday, September 13, 2022, at The Williamsport Home.

Born February 8, 1925, at South Williamsport, She was the daughter of the late John D. and Kathryn McCabe Shafer.

She was a child of the Great Depression. She had taken piano lessons as a child and enjoyed roller skating. She graduated from South Williamsport Schools in 1942. She then entered the former Williamsport Technical Institute taking classes in drafting.

Ruth was employed by the former Sylvania Electronics Company of Montoursville in 1943. She then transferred to the secretarial department at the West Third Street plant of Sylvania, where she was employed in their cathode ray department, which was the beginning of Television sets.

She learned to play the organ and became employed as a secretary at Grit. After Grit was sold on March 31, 1981, she remained employed with LAMCO until her retirement in 1990.

She was a member and former president of the Williamsport Area Management Club.

She married Max E. Mitchell on June 25, 1947. Max and Ruth became involved in vocal singing together.

In retirement, she traveled extensively with her husband and visited several European countries, South America, Hawaii, Australia, and many other places.

She had been a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club, helping at the Salvation Army with the Kettle Campaigns, and a member of the New Horizons Band of Williamsport and a former church organist.

She is survived by her sons; Max A. (Cathy) Mitchell of Williamsport, A. Michael (Kathie) Mitchell of Milton, and three grandchildren; Nathan A. (Theresa) Mitchell of Murray, UT, Karis (Mario) Flores of Pottstown, PA, and Jaret M. (Sarah) Mitchell of Royersford, PA, and ten great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Max E. Mitchell, a sister, Betty Horn, and a brother, John Shafer.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 19, 2022, at the Green Lawn Memorial Park, Montgomery, PA., with the Rev.Dr. Susan Halverdtadt, the pastor at Faxon Kenmar United Methodist Church, officiating. The family respectfully declines to receive funeral flowers.
