Joe Ball, 83, passed away on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at the North Carolina State Veterans Nursing Home in Black Mountain surrounded by the love of his family.

A native of Madison County, he was a son of the late John Quincey and Gertrude Edwards Ball and was born at the head of Banjo Branch of Bailey Mountain.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Toleda Whitt Ball, who passed on in 2011; a daughter, Connie Lynn Ball; two sisters, Elizabeth Large and Mildred Cruz; and three brothers, John Quincy Ball, Jr., Beige (Bud) Ball, and James (Jim) Ball.

In his early years, Joe was known for his athleticism. Joe soon joined the United States Army and was stationed in Alaska. As a self-made engineer, he machined one of the first nose cones used in space. He was the owner of Ball's Machine and Manufacturing for 42 years.

He was a man of the water whether it was of the lake or the ocean. Joe enjoyed the freedom of boating regardless of power or sail. But most of all, he was defined by the love of his family and the time that he spent with them. Joe was a member of Canton Central United Methodist Church.

He is survived by one daughter, Donna Ball-Metcalf and husband, Steve, of Weaverville; two sons, Gary Ball and wife, Janet, of Fletcher, and Gordon Ball and wife, DeAnna, of Weaverville; one brother, Phillip Ball and wife, Fay, of Mars Hill; one brother-in-law, Vance Whitt of Mars Hill; two sisters-in-law, Ellazene Wells of Johnson City, Tennessee and Jo Garrison of Weaverville; five grandchildren, Ali Ball Bunch and husband, Ryan, Leah McCrae Ball, Lauren Annabella Ball, Alexander Duncan Ball, and Mary Catherine Ball; one great-grandchild, Penelope Clover Bunch; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 22, 2018 at Canton Central United Methodist Church with the Reverend Paul D. Brown officiating.

Burial will follow at Pisgah View Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
