A brilliant light was extinguished on Monday, April 16, when Peggy (Young) Buchanan, 71, of Fort Atkinson, passed at Fort Atkinson Hospital, from complications with pneumonia.

Born in 1946 in Madison, WI, Peggy was the daughter of L.R. “Umy” and Pearl Young.

Growing up in Fort Atkinson and graduating in 1964, Peggy studied briefly at UW-Whitewater. A few years later, she met and married the love of her life, Kenneth Buchanan. Her marriage (of over 44 years) to Ken began her life of military travel, service to others through volunteering and the full-time job of motherhood - all of which she excelled at!

Peggy’s love for her family and others could be seen in her dedication to her children (Peter, born in 1967 and Kendra, born in 1976) and her support of their activities from scouts and sports to choir and endless chaperone trips. Her love for children was also apparent in the fact that she and Ken opened their home and hearts to over 38 foster children (all over two years) during their time in Texas in the late 70s. When Peggy wasn’t showing the world how amazing she was at taking care of others, she enjoyed working with area daycares, volunteering with the local library and working with families at the local women's shelter.

Stationed through the Army in Germany twice (for a total of 7 years), Peggy spent hours volunteering for the USO (United Service Organization) and the ACS (Army Community Service.) During Desert Storm, her family was proud to watch as she worked closely with German nationals to organize care packages for the brave soldiers serving. Her friends, American and German, knew her best for her happy smile, her willingness to help others and her enjoyment of experiencing other cultures.

After Germany, Peggy followed her husband to Virginia. There she and Ken helped to instill onto their young daughter the appreciation of the planet by organizing weekly family outings for “beach clean-ups.”

Upon her husband’s retirement soon after that, Peggy and Ken returned to Fort Atkinson to be closer to their WI family. Peggy hit the ground running to get involved with volunteering and helping others. She could be seen working with community members at the VFW, with the VFW Women's Auxiliary, with some of the local nursing homes, the American Legion, at Trinity Lutheran Church and more. Those who knew her best always knew they could find her smiling face at summer garage sales hunting for her next little treasure, at the Farmer’s Market with Ken or at home spoiling her beloved adopted furbabies, Chewy, Samson and Yogi.

Peggy’s positive attitude and love of her family stayed with her until the end. “Never give up” is now a family motto, inspired by Peggy’s strength, love and fortitude.
