Obituary is from the Storke Funeral Home (King George, Va.) website, posted April 2018:

Mark Alan Washburn, 56, of Colonial Beach passed away in his home on Sunday, April 1, 2018 from an apparent heart attack following a short illness. He was born to the late Ernie and the late Connie Washburn in Indianapolis, Indiana. Mark is survived by his wife, Jennifer (Jenny) Vechery Washburn; his brother Dave and wife Judy of Ohio; brother Dan and wife Shannon of North Carolina; sister Kathy and husband Jay of Virginia; brother-in-law Jimmy and wife Robin; sister-in-law Jackie of Virginia; father-in-law Jim of Virginia; nephew Spike and wife Heather of North Carolina; nephew Jason and partner Tara of South Carolina; niece Shannon and husband Scott of South Carolina; niece Tiffany and husband Justin of California; niece Stephanie and husband Jon of Virginia; niece Rachel and husband Jonathon of North Carolina; nephew Charlie and wife Kate of Virginia; niece Erin and fiancé Patrick of California; niece Kelly and husband Rich of Florida; niece Taylor and husband Steve; nephew Starner and wife Callie; niece Mari; great-nephews Alex, Rusty and Max; great-nieces Kira, Ava, Sydney, Lexi, Amelia, Abigail, Amelie, Evelyn and Margot; cousin Annette; step sister Joyce; his beloved Aunt Dot; cousins Randy, Patti, Beth and Steve; and other special extended family members and so many friends.

When the family moved to Pittsburg when he was 7, Mark became a life-long rabid Pittsburg Pirates fan. Whenever they travelled, if the Pirates were playing anywhere nearby, he and Jenny would go see them play. When he moved to Virginia a year later, he learned about football and joined the Washington Redskins Fan Club as well.

He was also an avid collector. From the time of his boyhood, Mark enjoyed searching for new Matchbox cars and baseball cards. In adulthood, he added "Got Milk" products, Star War and Star Trek products, and unusual elite writing pens. He had the most beautiful handwriting that he made up. He would always joke about it being a curse because Jenny asked him to write all their wedding invitations. He loved "Sudoku" and always completed them in the Sunday paper. Mark was often found at the zoo photographing the animals, at competitions catching candid shots of participants, or sharing his skills with family at weddings and other family gatherings. He was a Fonz Zoo (Wash, D.C.) photo club photographer. He would be proud of his shots and hand them out always at no charge. He also gained a passion for breeding and training dogs. Mark was actively involved in the Mid-Atlantic Disc Dogs, participating in competitions with his beloved Rose and Bella. Ozzie doesn't care much for Frisbees, but he loved to join the other two on a ride in the truck with Mark or trying to get his share of the doggy ice cream. Though he loved all his dogs and had them spoiled rotten, Mark always had a special place in his heart for his first dog named Roxie.

Mark was dedicated to his community and his work. During his time in Dale City, Virginia, he was a volunteer fire fighter. As a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church of Stafford, Virginia, he participated in various youth club mission trips and was in their choir. He was a truck driver and a dock hand in the local area for several different companies and was always a hard-working employee who loved to interact with his customers. He was the "glue" to his big family and always picked up the phone first and checked to see how his "flock" was doing.

Mark never met a stranger and was always ready to share a story, more often than not laughing at himself about something silly he had done. His description of the first time he got on a jet ski during a vacation with his best friend, Rex Biddle, had his Dad laughing for weeks. He was big-hearted, quick to laugh, would join his sister in a cry at the movies, and would do anything to help someone who was in need. He always loved to "pay-it-forward" by paying for the car behind him in a drive-through carry out and just watch the person's reaction. He and Jenny loved to spend time with extended family, showered their nieces and nephews with gifts and giggles and go to Michael W. Smith concerts. He kept in touch with his aunt and many cousins through Christmas cards featuring his dogs in antlers and Facebook. He will be very much missed; especially around Christmas when there is no new picture of his dogs. It was a special touch he had with animals. He was "saved" and his family and friends have comfort in knowing he is now back Home in Heaven with his Lord Jesus Christ and they will see each other again one day.
