Merlin was born on May 16, 1924, in Prophetstown, Illinois, the son of Roy and Lois Ann (Melton) Hannabarger. He served on an aircraft carrier in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He later married Haroldene A. Carlson on August 7, 1954, at Peace Lutheran Church, rural Port Byron. He was a carpenter, working 25 years for Erdman Construction in Geneseo and was self-employed for 25 more years. Merlin was a member of the Prophetstown American Legion Post #522 for 66 years and the Prophetstown Masonic Lodge #293 for 61 years. He was a URICRA Board member and enjoyed coaching girls softball when his daughters were younger. In his later years he loved following his grandchildren's activities and woodworking.
Survivors include his wife, Haroldene; children and their spouses, Mona Griffin, Rock Island, Rodger (Linda) Hannabarger, Colona, Gary (Leslee) Hannabarger, Princeton, Wis., Lesa (Tom) Ryan, Erie, and Len (Sandy) Hannabarger, Cordova; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren, with three on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Blaine Hannabarger in World War II, brother-in-law, Haldo Carlson, and grandson, Tommy Ryan.
