Son of Cornelius Vandersteen (1883 - 1965) and his wife Reijertje "Rica" (née Grift, 1883 - 1960)

From the book "A Place of Our Own - A History of Fisher Branch and surrounding towns" (1982), p 386

"When their youngest child, Gerry, was born, Rica was very ill, and the baby was never well. In late fall, when the baby took a tum for the worse, they decided to go to the doctor in Arborg. Cornelius and Rica took Paul and Mary along (who were eleven and sixteen years of age). The roads were very bad, and at one point the car swerved across the road to the ditch filled with water. Paul and Mary had to get out and push, all the while their mother was holding her sick
child in her arms. There was nothing the doctor could do for him, so they returned home. Gerry is remembered by his family as a baby who was always smiling and never cried. He died with a smile on his face on October 10th, 1930, at eleven months of age. Mr. C. Ravenstein made a beautiful little coffin for him out of rough lumber which he planed and painted.
Little Gerry is buried in the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Fisher Branch."
