Frederic Ives Carpenter, who retired as professor of English at the University of Chicago in 1911 to devote all his time to his studies, died yesterday at his home at 553 Woodlawn avenue. He was a trustee of the Newberry library and gave a number of valuable books to that institution, as well as to the libraries of the University of Chicago.

He was born in 1861, studied at Harvard and abroad, and returned to America to take his degree of doctor of philosophy at the University of Chicago in 1895. In 1923 he published a reference guide to the life and works of Spenser. He is survived by his wife and a son, Frederic Ives Carpenter, an instructor and graduate student in English at the Midway.
