Elizabeth Jeanne “Bette” (Bartshe) Olsen, 97, died Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at the Memorial Hospital of Converse County in Douglas surrounded by her family.
Bette was born Sunday, November 21, 1920 in Douglas, Wyoming the daughter of Leonard Henry and Grace L. (Leman) Bartshe. She was raised in the Boxelder area near Glenrock, Wyoming with her older sister, Ruth Warnock, and younger brothers, Leonard Bartshe and James Bartshe. Bette attended Willow Dell Country School through eighth grade and graduated from Converse County High School in Douglas. After graduation she went to work as a bookkeeper/secretary for Irwin Mills Hardware. While working for Irwin’s she met her future husband, Martin Julius “Marty” Olsen while having lunch at the Douglas Café’.
Marty and Bette were married on September 18, 1943. While Marty served four years in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, Bette spread her wings and moved to Ogden, Utah. The couple then moved back to Wyoming and raised their six children on a ranch in the Beaver Community. After their youngest child graduated from high school, Marty and Bette moved back to her parent’s ranch on Boxelder.
After Marty’s death in 1976 Bette began furniture refinishing and became an accomplished woodworker and craftswoman and continued in her early nineties. Her extensive talent also included creating a large collection of needle work and personally crocheted period dolls. Of all her many creations Bette was most proud of her miniature Victorian dollhouse that she constructed from blueprints and she filled the house with her own furniture and interior decorations.
Bette is survived by her children, Jeri (Larry) Philbrick, Marti (Bob) McNamara, Dean (Chris) Olsen, Vicki (George) Weiss, DeWayne (Chris) Olsen, and Gary (Cameo) Olsen; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Bette was preceded in death by her father, Leonard, on May 8, 1974; mother, Grace, on October 11, 2005; husband, Marty, on February 24, 1976; and siblings, Ruth Warnock, on March 18, 2015, Leonard Bartshe, on December 18, 1978; and James Bartshe, on March 3, 2009.
