Bobby Ray Goodman, 79, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Sunday, April 15, 2018, with his wife by his side.

Surviving him is his wife of 55 years, Rachel Dodson Goodman; son, Clark West Goodman and daughter-in-law, Rebecca Michie Goodman; and granddaughter, Victoria Goodman.

He is also survived by his sister, Kay McMullan; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bobby was the son of the late A. Clark Goodman and Geneva Goodman.

He grew up in Altamahaw, N.C., and received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Elon College and a master’s degree in math from Virginia Tech.

He began his career teaching mathematics in Roanoke City Schools in 1962 and retired after 30 years of teaching.

In 1985, Bobby was awarded the Honors Teacher Award from NASA.

An avid art lover, upon retirement from teaching, he enjoyed his time framing artwork at White House Galleries.

Bobby’s greatest joy was his family.

He was a devoted son, husband and father.

Bobby loved spending time with Victoria and making her laugh.

He was very proud of her.

Bobby was known in his family for his sense of humor and well-timed one-line quips or “Bobbyisms” as one niece called them.

A sports lover, he had a love for UNC basketball.

He will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at Valley Community Church at 5000 Carriage Drive, Roanoke.

The family will receive friends one-hour prior to the service and afterward a light luncheon will be served.

Bobby believed in giving back to the community, so, in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or to a favorite charity.
