Virgil Lee "Gus" "Swede" Fields, age 90 of Colfax, passed away on Saturday, April 14, 2018, at Park Ridge Care Center in Pleasant Hill.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 10:00 a.m at Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax. Burial will take place at Colfax Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Friday, April 20, 2018 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Virgil L. Fields Memorial Fund.

The son of Howard Willis and Jessie Mable "Jess" (Owens) Fields, Virgil was born on July 28, 1927, in Valeria, Iowa. On October 9, 1953, he was united in marriage to Dolores Faye Clark. Virgil proudly served in the United States Army during two tours in the Korean War. He worked for 35 years at Maytag in Newton. Virgil was an avid gardener, enjoyed playing cards, horseshoes, bowling and attending farmer markets.

Those left to honor his memory include his children; Larry Fields, Lorna (Jerry) Hofer, Lonnie (Patti) Fields, Kevin (Bekay) Fields; four grandchildren, Erica (Josh) Hiemstra, Melody (Rich) Hofer, Chad (Lisa) Hofer, and Kylee Fields; and three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Tervor and Emmett.

Preceding Virgil in death were his parents, his wife, Dolores in 1998 and four brothers, Earl, Gail, Wilbur, and James.
