Mary Marie Snodgrass, 84, of Springfield, died Sunday, April 15, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Home, after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Mary Marie was born August 10, 1933 in rural DeWitt County near Kenney, Illinois. She was the youngest child of Ulysses Grant Smith and Ella Ely Smith Williams. Mary Marie’s father was 62, and her mother was 36 when Mary Marie was born. Her father died when she was nine, and her mother married Herbert Williams, the stepfather who raised her. Mary Marie lived on a farm near Decatur as a young child, where she was responsible for the care of three hundred rabbits for the family business, many barn cats, and the family dogs. She passed her love of animals on to her family.

Mary Marie graduated from Stephen Decatur High School in 1951. Upon graduation, Illinois Bell Telephone hired her as a teller and quickly promoted her to a position as an Illinois Territory Representative. She taught business clients how to properly use their telephone systems through much of Illinois.

She met her late husband, Paul M. Snodgrass, the Springfield Branch Manager for IBM’s Office Products Division, at a business exhibit in the old Abraham Lincoln Hotel. After a brief courtship, they were married on October 29, 1960 in Springfield.

Mary Marie graduated from Sangamon State University (now the University of Illinois Springfield) with a B.A. in 1975, and an M.A. in 1978, both in communications. As a student she worked for WSSR Radio (which later became WSSU and then WUIS). Mary Marie used her communications degrees in volunteer service with the Springfield Junior Theatre Guild, the Ball-Chatham School District, and other nonprofit organizations. She was Executive Director for the Illinois Coalition of Library Advocates and was a freelance copy-editor. She was also an editor for the book 1001 Best Websites for Educators, (2000).

Mary Marie and Paul raised three children, Crystal Snodgrass VanDeventer of Springfield, Clark Snodgrass (wife, Elizabeth Morris) of Huntington Beach, California, and Carl Snodgrass of Phoenix, Arizona, all of whom survive her. Paul Snodgrass died in February 1998. She was also preceded in death by her stepfather; three brothers, William, Steve, and Robert Smith; and a sister, Dorothy Smith Nusbaum. In addition to her children, she is survived by three grandchildren, Paul S. VanDeventer of Urbana, Illinois, Laura D. VanDeventer of Springfield, and Jimmy J. Snodgrass of Mesa, Arizona; a stepsister, Margery Williams Beals of Decatur; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will hold a private memorial gathering on Sunday, April 22 followed by interment of cremated remains at the Old Baptist Cemetery in Kenney, Illinois.

The family of Mary Marie Snodgrass is being served by Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, Springfield, IL.
