Susan Elizabeth Morgan, age 101, of Carlsbad, California, passed away on Sunday, April 15, 2018 at Kaiser Medical Center, San Diego.

Funeral services honoring Susan’s life will begin at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at Schilling Funeral Home, Mattoon, Illinois with her nephew, the Rev. Carroll Richards, officiating. Burial will follow at Beals Cemetery, Trilla. Visitation for family and friends will be held at the funeral home from 10:00 AM until the time of the funeral service on Wednesday, April 25. It was Susan's wish that mourning clothes not be worn to her service.

Susan was born on May 25, 1916 in Clonmellane, Ireland, the daughter of Elizabeth Ann O'Neill Morphy and William West Morphy. She married Rolla N. Morgan of Trilla on December 3, 1938. He preceded her in death on December 6, 2002.

Survivors include her daughters Morgan Janis (Alan) of Encinitas, CA and Susan Merrill of Irvine, CA; grandchildren Gerald P. Martin (Nicole) of Escondido, CA, Erin Mistele (Greg) of Peapack, NJ, Shannon Meyers (Billy) of San Diego, CA and Becky Martin of Boston, MA; great grandchildren Rory Gracey of San Diego, CA, Miranda and Valerie Martin of Escondido, CA, and Emma, Owen, and Ivey Mistele of Peapack, NJ. She was preceded in death by her brothers George and William Morphy and sisters Kathleen Ann Peterson and Mildred Willison.

Susan lived in Clonmellane, County Kerry, Ireland until she was eleven years old when her family emigrated to the United States. After settling in Mattoon in 1927, her father and elder brothers operated the W. W. Morphy & Sons grocery store. Her uncle, the Rev. W. Blennerhasset O’Neill, was minister at the Union Congregational Church located at Shelby Avenue and 27th Street. In 1938, Susan met her future husband, Rolla N. Morgan of Trilla while he was home on leave from the U.S. Navy. They were married in Long Beach, California, just six months after they met. After raising their family in California and a brief time in Washington, D.C., Susan and Rolla returned to Mattoon where they lived until 1980. Susan was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a volunteer at the Sarah Bush Hospital. In 1980, Susan and Rolla moved to a retirement community in Arizona and after Rolla passed away, Susan moved to a senior community in Carlsbad, California to be nearer to her daughters. In accordance with Susan’s wishes, she will be buried in Beals Cemetery next to her husband Rolla.
