Master Corporal with The Royal Canadian Dragoons, based in Petawawa, Ontario. Age 30, he was originally from Newcastle, NB.

He and Tpr Patrick Pentland were killed and two others injured when a roadside bomb exploded near their Coyote armoured vehicle about 38 km west of Kandahar City, Afghanistan. They were assisting another vehicle that had been struck by a roadside bomb earlier in the day; one soldier suffered only minor injuries in the earlier attack. The blasts happened two hours and 750 metres apart.

MCpl Stewart joined the military in 1997 and was serving his fourth overseas tour, the second in Afghanistan.

He is survived by wife Christa and their daughters Brittany and Sarah; parents John Stewart and Blanche & Clark Gilks; brother Johnny; sisters Tammy and Tanya; grandmothers Sylvia Stewart and Edith MacDonald; parents-in-law Eva and Terry LeFurgey; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. Predeceased by grandfathers Ervine Stewart and Maurice MacDonald.

Repatriation ceremony held at CFB Trenton on April 15, 2007. Funeral Service with Military Honours held on April 20, 2007 in St. Francis of Assisi Chapel, CFB Petawawa.
