He graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point in 1939. Among his military awards and decorations were the Distinguished Flying Cross; Air Medal with OLC; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal; Prisoner of War Medal; World War II Victory Medal; and Air Commendation Medal.
He was predeceased by his parents, COL Robert Wilson Sears (1883-1979) and Marguerite Hume Sears (1886-1977); his wife, Emma Mary Hoch Sears; and his two brothers, Roderick Hamilton Sears and David Hume Sears. He was survived by two daughters; two sons; a daughter-in-law; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
