E.H. ZOBEL OF RIPON DIES AT 85

Edgar Herman Zobel, 85, of 603 Watson St., Ripon, died at 10:20 p.m. Tuesday at Ripon Memorial Hospital after an illness of five years.

Born in Ripon, Aug.10, 1883, he was the son of O. E. Herman and Pauline Kahl Zobel. He was formerly a teacher of instrumental music at Ripon College and at his private studio in Ripon. He was solo trombonist with the Tripoli Shrine Band in Milwaukee.

He was educated at Milwaukee Medical College (now Marquette University) where he received a Ph.D. in 1903 and a B.A. from Ripon College in 1907 and a M.A. degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1908. He studied guitar with John Hancock of Ripon (1895-1900); trombone with two teachers in violin, clarinet and woodwinds, and also music theory and conducting.

He was conductor and member of several bands in Ripon and elsewhere from 1895 to 1908; a chemistry teacher and director of the high school in the schools of Salt lake City, Utah, 1910-1911; director of the Ripon College Band in 1913-1919 and 1925-28; conductor and manager of the Ripon Little Symphony Orchestra, 1914-1936; a member of the faculty of the Adams School of Music in Seattle 1919-21; a member of the faculty of the Ripon College School of Music 1926-28: a member of the Summer Music Clinic faculty at the University of Wisconsin, 1929-39; director of the Princeton High School Band, 1928-39, and for 15 years director of the Badger Boys State Band.

He played with various professional ensembles, was a member of the Milwaukee Tripoli Shrine Band beginning in 2929 and for over 20 years (1918-1939) gave instruction in all band and orchestra instruments. He composed several band pieced and most recently trombone solo pieces.

He was also a registered pharmacist in the employ of the Wisconsin State Department of Agriculture as an inspector in the field of dairies and food processing. From 1946 until he retired, he was state milk sanitarian for the department with supervision of Wisconsin’s bottled milk markets. He served during World War II in the 9th Service Command as a captain.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Tripoli Temple Shrine, Alpha Omega Alpha of Ripon College, Phi Mu Epsilon and the Wisconsin Bandmasters Association. He was also an active member of International Association of Milk and Food Canitarians Inc.

His recreations and hobbies included gardening and the breeding and raising of registered Holstein cattle and Corriedale sheep. He never married.

Mr. Zobel is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Olga Zobel Hancox of Phoenix, Ariz., Mrs. Clara Zobel Baker of Green Lake, Mrs. Erna Zobel Luetscher, Ripon, and Miss Lillian Zobel, Ripon, and one brother Dr. Otto J. Zobel of Morristown, N. J.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the family residence, 603 Watson St., Ripon, the Revs. E. E. Schieler and Richard Carleton officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Ripon.

Friends may call at the family home after 3 p.m. Thursday.

Pallbearers were Robert Wyman, Tom Davis, Jerry Root, Robert Crain, E. L. Vinton and Norbert Bierman.
