Composer. He was highly percussive in the synthesized elements of Mexican, Indian and Spanish-Mexican influence. Trained primarily as a pianist, he developed much of his compositional skills from mostly independent instructors. Coming of age at the close of the Mexican revolution, he renewed cultural nationalism investigation of indigenous Indian cultures, native folk elements and dance forms to 20th Century Mexican music. A master of orchestration and compositional structure, he wrote over a hundred pieces to include five ballets, seven symphonies, four concertos, a cantata, an opera, plus innumerable pieces for voice, piano and chamber ensembles.
