He graduated in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Field Artillery. Bill served in the U.S. Army Reserves as an Artillery Officer while he attended Medical School at the University of Maryland. After graduation, Bill was promoted to the rank of Captain for the U.S. Army Medical Corps and began serving on active duty for his country during the Vietnam Was as a Neurologist at Fort Hood, Texas, and Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Upon completion of his active duty military commitment in 1965, he began his private practice as a neurologist in Charleston. During the time of his practice, he was also a professor of Neurology at West Virginia University Medical School, and taught neurology medical residents at the WVU's campuses in Morgantown and Charleston. He took care of many of his patients at Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC), Charleston General Division. While working at CAMC, he served as the Chairman for the Department of Neurology, served one year as the Chief of Staff, and was nominated as a member of CAMC's Board of Trustees.

Bill and his wife, Patty, moved to Charlotte Hall, Maryland, after his retirement in 1995. Bill was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman, and also enjoyed a number of activities including bicycling, snow skiing, hunting, woodworking, and volunteering at the Calvert Marine Museum, at Solomon's Island, Maryland.

At the museum, he joined a group of volunteers restoring historical fishing boats and sailboats that were put on display.

For many years, Bill enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father Curly, his sons, and hunting buddies at the family's Green Knob Hunting Camp in Brandywine. He will be dearly missed by many friends and family that loved him very much.
