Rev. Edward Rock Mooney, 92, of Sellersville, Pennsylvania; formerly of St. Clairsville, OH, went home to be with the Lord on Good Friday, March 30, 2018 in Sellersville, PA.

Ed was born on August 25, 1925 at the Mooney family farm near Livonia in central New York State. His late father, Edward Samuel Mooney, was then a high school principal and his late mother, Mary (Kurtz) Mooney, was a high school teacher.

The family moved to Albany, NY, in 1928 when Dr. Mooney became the Supervisor of Teacher Education for the State of New York. His mother continued teaching part-time. His late brother Dr. David Samuel Mooney was born later in 1928. Ed grew up with devoted Christian parents and was active with them in the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the local Boy Scout Troop.

Ed entered Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1943 to pursue a career in Electrical Engineering, and then was drafted into the Army in 1944 where he served in the Signal Corps until he was discharged in 1946 after World War II ended. He returned to R.P.I. and received a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1949. Just before he received a Master's degree in 1952, his career was abruptly changed when he responded to God's call to become a Christian minister. He was contemplating his future when a it came to him so vividly: “why not the ministry?" So after working as an engineer at General Electric that summer he began his studies at Princeton Theological Seminary in the fall.

At seminary he met the love of his life, Dorothy Faye Kirkwood, an instructor in the Christian Education Department. They were introduced while playing a “new game” called Scrabble, and their first official date was to see the movie "A Man Called Peter." During his time at seminary, Ed worked as an engineering instructor at Princeton University. After Ed's graduation in 1955, he was called to pastor the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Allentown, PA. Ed and Dorothy were married on June 16, 1956 in Princeton Seminary's historic Miller Chapel.

In Allentown, their three boys were born: Paul, Stephen and Philip. After 11 years he was called to the First Presbyterian Church in Springfield, PA. Ten years later he was called to the Calvary Presbyterian Church in St. Clairsville, OH where his first worship service was on Bicentennial Sunday, July 4, 1976. After retirement from Calvary Church in 1991, Ed continued to serve small churches in the Crossroads Parish part-time until 2006. He was honored as Pastor Emeritus by Calvary Church in 2014. In 2015, Ed and Dorothy moved to Sellersville, PA to be closer to family. He and Dorothy celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary before Dorothy passed away in 2016. During his years of ministry and in his retirement, Ed’s avocations included camping, sailing, piloting, traveling, motorcycling, photography, reading and visiting family.

Ed credited the wonderful life he lived with Dorothy, his family and friends, and with the high privilege of serving others in the name of Jesus Christ, to God's generous goodness and not to his own deserving. He saw heaven as a gift made possible by Jesus' resurrection and promise: "He who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live."

He is survived by his three sons, Paul E. Mooney & wife, Carole Cloud of Pleasanton, CA, Stephen T. Mooney of Virginia Beach, VA, Philip D. Mooney & wife, Denise of Sellersville, PA and his five grandchildren – Alex, Darla, Micah, Cole & Clara.

Family visitation and viewing will be held on Saturday, April 14th, 2018 from 10:00 am – 11:00 am at Lansdale Presbyterian Church, 450 Oak Park Road, Hatfield, Pennsylvania 19440 followed by a funeral service at 11:00.

A private burial will take place at Sellersville Cemetery.
