David Buford Horne was born October 3, 1939 in Russellville, Arkansas to Ernest (Ernie) and Mary Pearl (Gibson) Horne. David was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Mary Elise Horne.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Cathy Suzanne Horne; his son, Jon-David Horne and his wife Angie Horne; two daughters, Sarah Elise Bailey and Cambre Anne Horne-Brooks and her husband John Brooks and four grandchildren, Lynley Beth Chase and her husband Adam Chase, Emmerie Claire Bailey, Hays Alexander Brooks and Caleb Orion Horne, all of Fayetteville, Arkansas.
David grew up in Fort Smith, Arkansas where he graduated from Fort Smith High School in 1957. He was a very good American Legion baseball player during his high school years. David has many close friends from Fort Smith and has cherished his time with them during his life.
David entered the University of Arkansas in the fall of 1957 where he became a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity and was chosen for Blue Key Honor Fraternity. He played baseball for the Razorbacks lettering two years (batting .333 in 1959 and .340 in 1961). He graduated in January 1962 and accepted his ROTC commission in the US Army. He served two years at Fort Benning, Georgia and after a trip to the 1964 New York World’s Fair with friends, Jim and Linda Harwood, he returned to Fayetteville to enter law school in the fall of 1964. He served in the 188th Air Reserve Unit from 1964 to 1970. In law school, David made numerous friends for life. David graduated from the University of Arkansas Law School in January 1967 and was admitted to the Arkansas and United States Western District Court in March 1967.
He immediately began his practice in Fayetteville as a partner with Hugh R. Kincaid in the old First National Bank building on the downtown square. He was City Prosecutor and Assistant City Attorney in the 1960’s and 1970’s. David was President of the Washington County Bar Association in 1980. Later the firm added Bass Trumbo and became Kincaid, Horne and Trumbo Law Firm. He began practice with Darren Gibbs in 2012. He represented many people over his forty plus years in practice and was proud of the numerous clients that returned to him many times. As he did not like criminals, he did not do criminal law.
He has been a member of Central United Methodist Church since 1957, serving as usher and on several committees. Cathy and David taught Sunday School for sixth graders.
He coached his daughter’s softball teams and later, Jon-David’s teams in Little League baseball for many years. He loved golf and was the Match Play Champion at Fayetteville Country Club in 1994. Thereafter, he was Senior Match Play Champion five times until he became physically unable to play in 2009. He served two terms on the Fayetteville Country Club Board of Directors.
David was a soldier, lawyer, golfer, traveler, Razorback fan, and a Democrat. He loved the practice of law and respected the lawyers who practiced civility, a trait he said seems to fade with time and the advent of so many lawyers.
But, most of all, David was a family man and cherished his family. He was immensely proud of Cathy, his children and grandchildren and son-in-law, John Brooks. Enough cannot be said about his love for his family. He loved coaching them and attending their school activities. Enjoyed all the family gatherings, holidays, birthday dinners. And his grandchildren became the focus for both David and Cathy.
A celebration of David’s life will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, April 16, 2018 at Central United Methodist Church Activity Center, under the direction of Moore’s Chapel. Private burial will be in the Fayetteville National Cemetery.
