Teen, cousin killed in crash were 'close as any brothers'
Tate High School students returned to class Monday to find an empty chair where one of their own once sat.

Terry Eugene Godwin -- a sophomore at Tate -- died about 4:30 a.m. Sunday at Baptist Hospital from injures he suffered in a car accident about four hours earlier.

"Thankfully, we've had a pretty good day under the circumstance," Tate Principal Rick Shackle said. "Anytime you lose a child, it's unbelievable."

Shackle said grief counselors were at the school Monday to help students cope with the loss.

Terry, 16, of Cantonment was riding west on State Road 97 in a car driven by his cousin, Brian Dale Morgan, 28, of Molino. The Toyota Camry Morgan was driving started to drift as it traveled along a curve near Abramovich Lane, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

As Morgan steered the vehicle right, the car started spinning. The vehicle went back into the westbound lane, overturned and struck a tree near the roadside, the report said. Morgan was pronounced dead at the scene.

"They were as close as any brothers I knew," Rachel Morgan, 28, said of her husband and Terry.

A viewing for Terry is planned for 6 p.m. Wednesday at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North in Cantonment. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
