Fred was born in Braidwood, Illinois on March 5, 1918 to Fred W. Reed II and LaDessa (Shoemaker) Reed. He attended Illinois Wesleyan University where he joined Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity and graduated with a major in Business Administration.
Fred served his country during World War II and earned the rank of 1st Sergeant in the 296th Engineer Combat Battalion of the First Army. He participated in five combat missions and was with the first American troupes to enter Berlin.

Some of his favorite memories were playing trumpet in the P.G. & E. marching band, square dancing and competing at horseshoes, traveling and meeting new people in their RV and participating in Mount Vernon's Kiwanis and Lions clubs. He became a Freemason in 1941 and was an active Lodge member for many years.

Fred's family is very grateful for the doctors Leslie and Roger Estep and their many years of compassionate and skilled care; his caregivers and friends who helped him remain in his home; the wonderful staff and volunteers of Hospice of the Northwest and the kindness of the staff at Mtn. Glen Assisted Living.
