David A. Bassler Sr. passed away in West Brookfield on December 18, 2014. He was 82 years of age. David was born in Melrose, raised in Melrose, graduated from Malden Catholic High School, Class of 1950 and lived in Melrose most of his life before moving to Winchester in 1984. Mr. Bassler lived in Winchester from 1984-2010 and the past 4 years in West Brookfield. David served his country with pride in the US Army during the Korean War. After his discharge from the service, Mr. Bassler joined the elevator union and worked in elevator construction for Westinghouse Elevators for 50 years. He was an extremely hard worker throughout his entire life, always enjoyed working around his yard and cleaning his pool. David was a former Pop Warner football coach in Melrose, a member of the VFW in Malden, was a former altar boy at St. Mary's Church in Melrose and in his younger years enjoyed water skiing. Mr. Bassler went to all his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren's sporting events, enjoyed spending summers down Cape Cod and loved the Christmas Holiday Season. He was the husband of the late Carolyn (LaBombard) Bassler & the late Rosemarie (Ryan) Bassler. Loving father of David A. Bassler Jr. of Boston, Trudy White of Woburn & her former husband Barry White of Reading, Jane M. Bassler Early and her longtime companion Mark Rider of West Brookfield, Scott C. Bassler of CA and Linda A. DeJordy of VT. Step father of Laurie LaBombard of Wakefield. Grandfather of Nicole & Tyler Strout, Dana Bassler, Danielle White, Erica Westerman, Ashley Miller, Kayla DeJordy, the late Randy DeJordy, Dylan DeJordy, Lauren Vara & Taylor Downey. Also survived by 11 great grandchildren. Visiting hours will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 West Foster St. Melrose on Sunday, December 21st from 2:00-6:00PM followed by a Funeral Service on Monday December 22nd at 11AM. Relatives & friends are respectfully invited to attend. Burial in Calvary Cemetery in Winchester. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Research Association, 480 Pleasant St. Watertown, MA 02472.
