She was a descendent of Francis Scott Key author of the "Star Spangled Banner" national anthem. She lived in various places in St. Mary's County during her youth including Tutor Hall in Leonardtown and her uncle's farm near Samson Harbor on the Patuxent River. In her youth she enjoyed riding horses, fishing and crabbing in the local streams and Chesapeake Bay.
She graduated from Margaret Brent High School, class of '36, then attended St. Mary's Seminar Junior College followed by employment at NAS Patuxent River during WWII. Nelly was an accomplished seamstress and made much of her family's clothes, and she supplied the family with warm hand-made sweaters. After retirement, Nelly and husband Bill traveled extensively throughout the country and overseas to Great Britain, France, and Germany.
Nelly was preceded in death by her son, James K. Rindfleisch, and husband, William C. Thompson. She is survived by step-sons, David C. Thompson of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Thomas N. Thompson and his wife, Merry Tillou, of Cornelius, NC. Other surviving family members include her favorite nieces and nephews in Maryland: George Barnes, wife Pam and daughter Zoe of Annapolis, Ann Barnes and children Kate and Walt of Columbia, and Janet Barnes and husband Jim King of St. Leonard.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2018, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Newport News. Burial will follow for immediate family at the Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News. Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport News, is in charge of local arrangements.
