Mary was born on January 31, 1929, in McMinnville, TN, and moved with her family in 1930 to Cincinnati, OH, where she grew up.

She met her future husband, Harold Dietz, in kindergarten. They were married in 1948. In 1954 Harold accepted a commission in the U.S. Air Force, which began a life of travel for the family. Mary was a devoted wife and mother. She embraced and loved her family through multiple moves and many family camping trips and adventures. She was proud to earn a B.S. in Social Work from The University of Akron in 1987 and an M.A. in Pastoral Counseling from Ashland Seminary in 1992. She was an active member of New Covenant Community Church and the AM-BV chapter of P.E.O.
