Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War as Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the 17th Maine Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on April 6, 1865 for "gallant services at Amelia Springs, Va.".
