Dr. Herman S. Hettinger. president since 1951 of D. M. S. Hegarty & Associates, Inc., financial and stockholder relations counsel, died Monday at the age of 70. He lived at 433 West 21st Street.

Dr. Hettinger received a doctorate in economics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1933 and taught there for 12 years. He was chairman of the Wharton School's marketing department from 1940 to 1942.

During World War II, Dr. Hettinger was deputy director of the Office of War Informa tion's domestic branch. From 1944 to 1948 he was an execu tive with the Crowell‐Collier Publishing Corporation and later he was associate director of research and economics for McCann‐Erickson, Inc., adver tising agency.

The author or editor of books and articles on a wide range of subjects, including "A Dec ade of Radio Advertising," "America's Symphony Or chestras" and "Financial Public Relations for the Business Cor poration," Dr. Hettinger was also active in the English Speaking Union and was a member of the Lawyers Club and of the Players.

He leaves his wife, the former Helen Pierson, an editor and librarian known profes sionally as Helen Wessells, and a stepson, Thomas.
