At the time of this memorial creation (Apr 2018) the exact maiden name and parents of Martha Jane are unknown. In fact, it is only a supposition that her middle initial "J" stood for Jane. However, an inspection of the 1860 Marshall County, Alabama Census reveals a very likely prospect in a Martha Isbel, age 16, living 2 doors from Jasper Venable with her widowed 49 year old mother, also named Martha Isbel.

Martha Jane married Jasper Venable in Marshall County, Alabama about late 1864 or early 1865 when she was 20 years of age. They had five children as follows:

1) James Thomas (b. 28 Oct 1865)
2) Mary E. (b. 1867)
3) Marcus A. ( b. 1870)
4) Martha (b. 1872)
5) John (b. 1873)

Martha Jane died in 1873 at the age of 28 following the birth of her 5th child, John. Her widowed husband then took another Martha for his second wife. On 25 Nov 1874 Jasper Venable married Martha Louisa Gates in Marshall County, Alabama. She was born in Georgia in Oct 1854 and was 10 years younger than Jasper. She was one month past her 20th birthday when they married. Over the next 25 years, she and Jasper had 12 children. They moved to Ellis County, Texas between 19 March 1895 and 8 June 1898 when an infant daughter was born and died 4 days later and buried in Sanderson Cemetery, Bardwell, Ellis County, Texas. Jasper and Martha Louisa's last child, daughter Idella was born Jul 1899.

Since Jasper's first wife, Martha Jane UNK died in Marshall County, she was most likely buried in a cemetery where other Venables are found. She is very likely buried in Raney Cemetery where Jasper's father Ezekiel is buried.
