Michael Scott Patterson, 62, of rural Osceola, passed from this life August 22, 2021, at his home.

Michael was born on January 31, 1959, the third child of Lester and Connie Patterson. Educated in the Clarke Community school system, he graduated in 1977. He married Donna Jean Brown, of St. Charles, May 22, 1981, and one child, Tyler Douglas, blessed this union.

During their marriage and through Donna's frequent, limiting, and ultimately terminal health conditions, they epitomized the deeper meanings of marriage, devotion, unconditional love, and positive regard for one's partner. Their headstone displays a color wedding photo, interlocking wedding bands, and the epitaph "two hearts to one". Donna's death in March 2004, left one heart without its mate, but during the past 18 years, Michael did his best to ensure her legacy was remembered as he dutifully and regularly maintained Donna's and other family burial plots.

Michael, a fourth-generation family farmer, deeply understood the value of land, the personal and spiritual freedom and quintessential lifestyle farming can provide. Michael became employed by DHL (formerly Power Logistics) in the autumn of 1996, however, when Donna's health conditions prevented her from working. Michael maintained their farm, his parents' farm, did his best as a father, and was a faithful employee of DHL until the time of his passing.

He was fond of his job in town, and it provided much needed balance, personal restoration, and contrast when situations at home or on the farm became difficult. He cherished coworker relationships and was very happy to be part of a team.
Michael will be remembered for his many quirks, straightforward manner, and willing attitude toward the trials of life. He was very self-aware and could recount his faults and misgivings honestly and logically, oftentimes, while honestly educating someone else on his or hers in a straightforward and helpful manner. He believed the hardest choices were often the right ones, and never shirked his responsibilities despite tragedy or loss.

Michael's decision to end his own life was one rooted in the hope of joining his beloved Donna and a firm belief that his time here was simply done. Though his final act leaves his family heartbroken and in momentary sorrow, Michael deemed Earthly life temporary. Michael firmly believed in the minimization of needless pain and suffering for animals and people, himself included.

He would, however, be sincerely disappointed if his decision unduly influenced another person. For him, it was deeply personal, considered at length, and not impulsive. Those having thoughts of suicide are encouraged to seek help immediately or contact the national suicide lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Connie; great-aunt Norma (Robert) Patterson; his wife, Donna; and lifelong friend, Mike Byerly.

Cremated per his wishes, Michael's earthly remains will lay at rest next to his wife, in Fremont Cemetery amongst generations of family in rural Clarke County.

Left to honor his memory are his son, Tyler, of West Des Moines; sister, Mary (Howard) Denney of Osceola; brother, Tom (Sharon) Patterson; parents in-law, Dale and Joan Brown of St. Charles, IA; brothers in-law Tim (Sindy) and Chris (Stephanie) Brown of St. Charles, IA; nephews and nieces: Matthew, Trenton, Ashley, Bernie, Tevyn, Brent, Brandon, Sarah, Melinda and their respective families; his great uncle, Robert Patterson of Ida Grove; friend, Patricia Cardwell of Des Moines; lifelong friend, Jon Handrock of North Carolina; neighbors, and his DHL coworkers of nearly 25 years.

The code by which Michael lived echo in the hearts of his family, and he would hope they echo in yours, too: 'Make your word your bond; honor your commitments, check your course often and make corrections as necessary; be completely honest always; and, above all, do the best you can with whatever crosses your path in life.'

The Patterson family is leaning on each other, trusting in our respective faiths, bonds of love, and the goodwill we have for one another. Michael met the numerous challenges and losses in his life by focusing on whatever normal life activities and responsibilities lay before him. His family honors his legacy by striving to manage our grief as Michael would. The family greatly appreciates all the kindness shown from friends and neighbors during our time of loss.

No services are planned at this time. The family requests no flowers or gifts. Memorial contributions may be made in care of Kale Funeral Home.
