Dr. Chin was born in Georgetown, British Guiana, to Alexander and Lillian Chin.
The third of six children, Dr. Chin graduated high school at 15. He worked in his father's dry goods store for several years before attending Queens College, in Georgetown.
At Queens College, Dr. Chin excelled in sports and won numerous track and field competitions. Recognizing his athletic talent, a family friend introduced Dr. Chin to Jamaican sprinter Herb McKenley, an Olympic gold medalist and a graduate of the University of Illinois, when McKenley was in Trinidad competing at a track meet.
McKenley helped secure an athletic scholarship for Dr. Chin to attend the University of Illinois, where he became a member of the track and field team. Dr. Chin studied pre-med and received his B.S. degree in 1953. He then attended Northwestern Dental School, and received his dental degree in June, 1956.
That same year Dr. Chin married Ada Chun. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served three years in the Army Dental Corps at Fort Totten, New York. He retired as a captain.
Dr. Chin began his dental practice in 1959 in Forest Hills, N.Y., serving families from Fort Totten, the United Nations, as well as local residents. He was a member of the New York State Dental Society and the Queens County Dental Society. He retired in 1990. An avid tennis player and golfer, he moved to PGA National at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and later to Trilogy in Corona.
In addition to his wife Ada, Dr. Chin is survived by his son Steven, daughter Beverly, and three grandchildren, Maya, Nicholas, and Lauren.
Dr. Chin has requested that he not have a memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Bekki Lee Memorial Scholarship, Att.: David Carpenter, Scripps College, 1030 Columbia Avenue, Claremont, CA, 91711.
