Dr. Brenda Lee Sargent, age 42, Vice Principal of the Carl Sandburg Intermediate School in Fairfax County died February 26, 1991 in her home in Alexandria. She was born on January 19, 1949 in Newport News, Va. She received her Bachelor of Science in mathematics and general science from James Madison University; was awarded a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction; and Doctor of Education in Administration from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She was a noted and beloved educator who served as a mathematics teacher and department chairperson and basketball coach at Hayfield Secondary School from 1970 to 1985. In 1985 Brenda became Special Project Teacher at Carl Sandburg rising to Assistant Principal in 1986. She was a member of the National Education Association, the Virginia Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, Phi Delta Kappa, Alpha Sigma Tau, and The Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Dr. Sargent, leaves behind a legacy of love and enrichment in addition to many family members, her parents, John F. and Dorothy L. Sargent, Alexandria; two sisters, Linda S. Kaufman and her husband Dr. John P. Kaufman, Roanoke; LaDonna S. Johnson and her husband, Rep. James C. Johnson, Greenwood, S.C.; a brother, John S. Sargent, Jr. and his wife, Diana R. Sargent, Alexandria; her loving companion, Dr. Sandra Lee Wagner, Alexandria; two nieces, Elizabeth D. Kaufman and Anna U. Sargent; five nephews, John F. Sargent, III; William S. Kaufman, Paul R. Sargent; James S. Johnson; and Andrew L. Johnson and her pet cocker, Happy.
