Captain E.I. McDowell commanded Company I of the 15th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment for the Union Army. He was killed in action while leading his company in the assault on the Confederate position at the battle of Resaca, Georgia on May 14, 1864.
Edward was granted 20 days leave on Feb.10, 1864. He married Alice Elizabeth McCrum Johnson on Feb. 29. She just celebrated her 17th birthday on Jan. 1. He returned to his command a few days later and was killed in action 10 weeks after their marriage. Alice then married Joseph Anthony/Antone Zanone, who passed away in 1918. She passed away in 1930 and was also buried in Cave Hill cemetery, just a hundred feet from her first husband who died 76 years earlier.
