Her parents, Polly and Ballard Garner, were living in Lone Oak, Texas when Cecil was born on September 28, 1913. She obtained her education in Hollis, Oklahoma. The couple moved to California in 1935, living first in Los Alamos. They then lived in Nipomo, later moving to Santa Maria where they eventually retired. Ures, who was known as "Haywire," retired from Union Oil in 1973. Cecil retired from Sisters Hospital in 1964 after 19 years providing loving care to her many patients. She found great joy in nursing, giving skillful care along with a positive attitude and a cheerful smile. She was known and loved by many of her former patients, especially those who had employed her as a "private duty" nurse.
Cecil enjoyed people, always had a ready smile, and the telephone was always in use, checking on her many friends and relatives just to see if all was well with them. She especially enjoyed her church family and is the last charter member of the Church of the Nazarene in Santa Maria.
She was a great story teller, keeping grandchildren and great-grandchildren enthralled with her remembrances of the "old days," such as crossing Texas in a covered wagon and picking cotton with her father.
Cecil is survived by three children: daughter Rita Martins of Las Vegas, Nevada; son and daughter-in-law Wayne and Dixie Allen of Santa Maria; and son and daughter-in-law Dennis and Norma Allen of Lewiston, Idaho. Eight grandchildren survive: Denise (Todd) Goodwin, Mark (Sharlene) Martins, David (Debbie) Martins, Rita (Hawley) Waterman, Michael (Sheryl) Allen, Renee' Baber, Robert Allen, Julie (Joe) Frost; as well as fourteen great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Cecil was preceded in death by her husband, Ures C. Allen, parents Polly and Ballard Garner, son Ures C. Allen Jr. and her four sisters Mabel Cooper, Evelyn Holloway, Jean O'Neal, and "Babe" Ruth Guggia.
Services will be held on Monday, April 9, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. at the Church of the Nazarene, 1026 E. Sierra Madre, Santa Maria. Burial will follow at Santa Maria Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary and Crematory.
