Statesman, 29th President of Brazil. He served from 15 March 1974 to 14 March 1979. Prior to becoming president he attended several military schools at an early age. He then joined the army. He then participated in memorable events such as the revolution of 1930, the Getúlio Vargas dictatorship and the 1964 military coup d'état that overthrew the leftist President João Goulart. Afterwards, he became an important figure and he became Military chief of Staff of President Humberto de Alencar Castelo Branco. In 1964 he became a Lieutenant General and in 1966 a four star General. In 1969 he was made president of Petrobras, the state-owned oil company of Brazil. He then became a military backed candidate for president and elected by a clear majority of congress to a five year term. He is best remembered for abandoning the previous use of dictatorial powers and initiating a gradual liberalization and demilitarization of the government. He introduced open legislative elections in 1974, meeting with opposition leaders, and relaxing censorship. He adopted a more pragmatic foreign policy. He established diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China and Angola and he sought alliances, more importantly, economic opportunities in other parts of the Globe, especially Africa and Asia. After he left office, he continued to play a major role in Brazil’s petrochemical industry.
