GAINESVILLE - Mary Louise McDonald Durance of Gainesville, went home to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 29, 2018. She was a 66 year resident of Alachua County. Mary, a 4th generation Floridian, was born in Pierce, Polk County, Florida, Feb 24, 1931.
Graduating Mulberry High School in 1949, she attended FSU for 1 year, and received a diploma in Secretarial Science from the Business University of Tampa. She married her beloved husband Kenneth, of 67 years, Feb. 24, 1951 and moved to Gainesville. She worked in the Chemistry Department at UF while he attended UF for his BSA degree. They lived in Bartow, Florida for 18 months where she worked at IMCC. Returning to Gainesville in Dec, 1956 and she worked in the College of Agronomy until Glenna was born in 1959 and Tommy in 1966.
While Ken worked as a Professor of Animal Science at the University of Florida, they also raised hogs and beef cattle on the farm until moving to Gainesville in 1998. She returned to college and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Florida at age 53, and worked at Alachua General Hospital for 12 years.
An active member of North Central Baptist Church for 49 years, she enjoyed serving in the children's ministry and attending the women's Bible studies. She was also a member of the UF Alumni Association, Gator Boosters and a long time fan of Gator Sports, a member of Alachua General Hospital Auxiliary, former member of the University Agricultural Women's Club, Florida & Alachua County Nurses Association's.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth L. Durrance, daughter Glenna Venoy Spiegel & (Geoff Spiegel), son Tommy Durrance (Jill), beloved grandchildren Lauren Venoy, Chris (Katie) of Kristen (fiancÃce Sean McCann), Cole, Noah, and Madison Durrance of Tampa. Brother Kenny McDonald of Mulberry Florida, brother-in-law Bob Caldwell of Tallahassee and sister-in-law Ginny McDonald of Tampa and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded by her parents, Roy and Flossie McDonald her brothers Glenn, Duke (Mary) Buck, Paul (Opal) & Dellwood McDonald.
