MURPHY - James Robert Penland, 91, a devoted husband, father and grandfather of 1175 Peachtree Hills Road, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at Murphy Medical Center with his family at his bedside. A native of Clay County, he was a son of the late James Arthur and Estella Herbert Penland. He was a graduate of Hayesville High School and attended Western Carolina University. While at Hayesville High, he was active in sports and played in the first school football game in 1927 and was quarterback of the 1929 championship team. On July 24, 1931, he married Mattie Lou Mease Penland, who died May 9, 2001. They made their home in Clay, Macon and Cherokee counties. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps and the North Carolina Department of Conservation. He later worked for the TVA and was the Clay County fire warden. From 1951 to 1974 he worked for the N.C. Department of Revenue. After retirement, he served as Cherokee County Commissioner for two terms and was county chairman in 1977 and 1978. He was instrumental in obtaining funds for the construction of the Farmers Market and the James Robert Penland Senior Citizen Building, both located in Murphy. He enjoyed fishing and gardening. His sister, Beulah Mae Moore, and three brothers, George A. Penland, June Penland and Edward Penland preceded him in death. He was a charter member of the Murphy Rotary Club and served as chairman of the Social Services Board of Cherokee County. He was a member of the Clay County Masonic Lodge No. 301, whose members will be honorary pallbearers. Surviving are a son, Joseph Robert "Bud" Penland and wife Becky of Murphy; two daughters, Jo Ann Thompson and husband Charles of Woodstock, Ga., and Bobbie Lou Caldwell and husband Hardy of Hendersonville; two brothers, Frank Penland and wife Wilma of Richmond, Va., and Norman Penland and wife Mary of Greenville, S.C.; eight grandchildren, Lu Ann Snipes, Melinda Hogg, Tommy and Chuck Thompson, Bo Caldwell, Penny Hall and Bob and Brad Penland; 18 great-grandchildren; and caregiver, Cathy McClain. A service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Oak Forest United Methodist Church, Hayesville, of which he was a member. The Revs. Jacob Kyker and Clyde Faulkner will officiate. Private graveside services will be held in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oak Forest Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 152, Hayesville, NC 28904. Penland and Sons Funeral Home, Swannanoa, is service the family.
