Thelma Inear McMullan

Funeral services for ninety-one year old Newton resident were held Saturday, December 12, at the Webb Funeral Chapel. Dr. Douglas and Rev. Roger Yorks were the officiating ministers. Interment took place in the Masonic Cemetery.

Mrs. McMullan died at her residence of heart failure December 10, 1998. She was a member of the Newton Presbyterian Church, The Newton Culture Club, The Great Books Readers Club and a founding member and continued member and supporter of The Newton Arts Council serving on the board of directors and board of director of the J. Elliott McMullan Library. She was a member of the Democratic Party and remained active and interested in civic and community affairs as long as her health permitted.

Her survivors include her husband, Milton McMullan; two daughters, Martha Ann Aasen of Westport, Conn, and Sarah McMullan of Nacogdoches, Texas; two sons, James McMullan of Lake Forest, Illinois and David McMullan of Jackson, eleven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were: Wade Turnage, Wyche McMullan, Dick McMullan, Pat McMullan, Jr., Paul McMullan, Elliott McMullan, James McMullan and David McMullan.

Honorary pallbearers were Wilmer Whittle, Eddie Phillips, James Mason, James Hart, Van Lucas, Jack Brand, Frank Barber, Paul Barber, Richard McMullan, David McMullan, Jr., David Aasen and Pat McMullan, III.

Webb Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Prominent Newton resident dies at 91

Thelma McMullan, the wife of Milton McMullan of Newton, died of heart failure at her home on Dec. 10. She was 91. Thelma McMullan was a daughter of James Strather and Inear Ann Russell Boozer. On May 13, 1928, she married Milton Milton McMullan. In May of this year, the couple couple celebrated their 70th wedding wedding anniversary. Milton and Thelma McMullan McMullan first lived in Lake, and they moved to Newton in 1940. She was active in community and civic activities throughout her life. She was a member, secretary and president of the Newton County Board of Library Trustees. She also was a member of the Kemper-Newton Kemper-Newton Kemper-Newton Regional Library Board of Trustees. Trustees. Thelma helped organize the League of Women Voters in Newton, and in 1988 the Mississippi Mississippi League of Women Voters gave her their "Thelma Worksman Award" for distinguished distinguished service. She was a long-time long-time long-time member of the Newton Culture Club and served as its president. She also helped organize the Great Books Readers Club. She was a member of the Newton Presbyterian Presbyterian Church. Thelma was office manager at the McMullan Motor Company for 40 years and retired when the McMullans sold the business in 1968.

Active in the Democratic party, she served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1964. At that convention she was one of the few Mississippi delegates who did not walk out of the convention. The walkout was the result result of a civil rights dispute.

During the 1964 election campaign she traveled with Lady Bird Johnson on the campaign train through the South. She also served as a member of the Electoral College in 1964.

Funeral services for Mrs. McMullan were held Dec. 12 at Webb Funeral Home with interment in the Masonic Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Milton McMullan; children Martha Aasen of Westport, CT; Sarah McMullan of Nacogdoches, TX; James McMullan, Lake Forest, IL; and David McMullan of Jackson, MS.

She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren. Other survivors include daughters-in-law Madeleine McMullan, Lake Forest, IL; Patty McMullan, Jackson, MS; and son-in-law Larry Aasen, Westport, CT. She was preceded in death by her sisters Jean Johnston and Elton Boozer. Born Sept. 1, 1907 in Del Rio, TX, she lived briefly in Douglas, AZ, and then grew up in Lake, MS.
