Barbara Jean Walton, "Jo", to her family, 77, went home to our Lord on Sunday, March 25, 2018. Born in 1940 in King & Queen County, VA, she is preceded in death by her parents, Oscar Loving and Vernelle Wilmore Walton and brothers, William Oscar Walton and Ernest C. "Bobby" Walton. She is survived by sisters, Christine Worthington and Bessie Bryan (G.D.). She also leaves behind a very dear friend of many years, Jenny Mundy of Mechanicsville, VA, and many nieces, nephews, church family members and friends.
Barbara passionately loved her church, Mattaponi Baptist, where she was a lifelong member. She served as the church clerk for many, many years and taught the adult Sunday School class. Barbara was also the first and only women to serve as a Deacon for this church.
Barbara started her business career in 1959 as an Administrative Assistant and Secretary at the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co., later named Verizon Communications. She held many responsible positions in the phone business that spanned operations in multiple states. Barbara retired as Customer Billing Operations Manager in 2002 after 44 years of service.
Barbara was very active in Republican politics and quick to share her conservative views and values. She read RTD and Wall Street Journal editorials and was happily engaged when discussing them. She was a Past President of the Hanover Republican Women’s Club and held many board positions.
She was also a Past Matron and member of the Gordonsville Chapter #186 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Gordonsville, VA.
Barbara was soft spoken yet firm and insightful when it was necessary. She loved her family and provided a firm listening ear and support to all in time of need.
She will be remembered by her bright smile, gentle way, and giving heart.
A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held at 12 p.m., Saturday, March 31st at Mattaponi Baptist Church, 13468 The Trail, King & Queen Court House, VA 23085. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Her family will receive friends beginning at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Mattaponi Baptist Cemetery Fund % Roberta Jones, PO Box 188, St. Stephens Church, VA 23148.
