Jean's father, Arley Griffin, left the family when Jean was young. Jean was raised to adulthood by her mother, Norma Belle Dunham Griffin.

On April 24, 1959, Jean married the love of her life, Charles Warren "Jack" Murray in Reno, Nevada. Together, in the fall of 1959, they purchased a brand new home at 5424 Valparaiso Circle, Sacramento, California. Norma lived with Jack and Jean until Norma's death in 1992. Jack died the following year in 1993. Jean lived in the home the rest of her life.
On March 28, 2018, Jean succumbed to hypercalcemia and pancreatic cancer at the Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Roseville, Placer County, California. Per her wishes, her body was cremated and her ashes were placed beside her husband in the Sunrise East Mausoleum at Sierra Hills Memorial Park.
Jack and Jean had no children. Both were dearly loved by their family and friends.
