Roy Franklin Powell, Sr., 78 of Elizabethtown, died Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at Hardin Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Rockcastle County, and retired after 23 years from the U.S. Army, having served during Vietnam where he was a member of the Black Horse. He was a member of New River Worship Center and the American Legion Post #113. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Douglas and Anna Jones Powell and two sisters, Janice and Beulah. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Juanita Deathreage Powell; two sons, Roy Franklin Powell, Jr. and Brian Keith Powell both of Elizabethtown; one brother, Chester (Helen) Powell of Berea; three sisters, Margaret Gabb and Jewell Carpenter both of Berea and Joyce (Larry) Hobbs of Lexington and his nieces and nephews, Scotty, Tessa, Paige, Elwood, Diane, Melissa, Heather, Douglas, Geraldine, Kay, Jimmy, Marsha, Timmy, Ben, Donita, Kevin, Greta, Hannah and Harold. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Michael Willingham and Bro. Kenny Gillenwater officiating. Burial will follow in Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens.
