Michael James Stokely was a lifelong resident of the state of Georgia, born in DeKalb County then moving to Loganville at the age of 12. He was much loved by his parents, step-parents, siblings and a multitude of friends. He was deeply involved with the Loganville First Baptist Church which was a central part of his life. He was a graduate of Loganville High School where he participated in many activities including football,Soccer, cheerleading, Foreign Language Club and ROTC.

Michael was studying political science at George Military College when he was called to active duty in the Georgia National Guard in the fall of 2004. He was deployed to Iraq as a member of the 48th Brigade, E Troop-108th Calvary in the Spring of 2005 only 10 days after marrying his high school sweetheart. He was killed on August 16 in Yusufiyah, Iraq when a bomb exploded near his patrol.

Michael was survived by his mother and stepfather, father and step-mother, siblings, aunt, uncles and many other relatives and friends. On April 20, 2018 Sgt. Stokely was laid to rest in Section 57 of Arlington National Cemetery.
