Karen Hayes, 72, of Idaho Falls, died Monday, March 26, 2018, at her home from the effects of Pulmonary hypertension. She was under the expert and loving care of Hands of Hope Hospice.

Karen was born on May 26, 1945, in Newport, Rhode Island to Edgar LaVell Goodwin and Grace LaRue Cobbley Goodwin. She grew up in Idaho Falls and New Zealand. She graduated from Church College of New Zealand in 1962 where she was awarded “outstanding office practice student” in her graduating class. She later attended Brigham Young University where she earned her BA degree the same year her daughters graduated from High School.

On April 9, 1964, she married her sweetheart, J.R. Hayes, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They lived in Ririe, Pocatello and Idaho Falls. To this union three children were born: Jay R., Paula and Sherry.

She worked as a stenographer at the Chemical Processing Plant for a short while and was the owner of “Natures Image” silk Floral shop.

Karen was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served her church in many various positions including: camp director, patriarchal scribe, Young Women’s president, Relief Society President, a counselor in LDS Social Services Adoption Agency, ordnance worker, asst. Matron to the Idaho Falls Temple President . She also served on three LDS Missions.

She enjoyed many things but her favorite hobbies were being a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and mostly spending time with her family. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, cooking/baking, candy making, wood working, seamstress, florist, doll-making, camping, four wheeling, snowmobiling and traveling with her husband. She did it all!

She is survived by her husband, J.R. Hayes; her children: Jay R. (Kathi) Hayes, Paula (Tory) Justin, Sherry (Jeramie) Freeman all of Idaho Falls, Idaho; three brothers: Brent (Susie) Goodwin, Chris (Louise) Goodwin and Kent (Fern) Goodwin; three sisters: Kay (Theron) Borrowman, Kathy (Kevin) VanGilder, and TeRia (Ross) Glauser, all of the St. George area; 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 31, 2018, at Taylor View LDS Ward, 1291 West 6500 South (York Road (6500 south) is now open). The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, March 30, 2018, at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First Street, Idaho Falls and one hour prior to services at the church.
