She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Aubrey G. Hickman, her children, William Aubrey Hickman (Mary), Mill Creek, Jean H. Yates (Danny) of Boiling Spring Lakes, Joy H. Guin (Mark), Mill Creek, her grandchildren, William Anthony Hickman (Michele), Tabitha Hickman Knight (Troy), Kimberly Jean Yates (Jeff), and 2 great grandchildren, Cameron and Carly Knight. She also leaves a special niece, Linda Appleby Lee, of South Carolina, and a special family friend, Freya Higgins Desbiolles, of Australia. Alice had many extended family and friends that she loved. For those that knew her, knew that she was a hard worker. She loved to work in the garden and in the field, loved her animals, and loved her birds that she raised for many years.
Alice and her family moved to Long Beach in 1961 from Winnabow. She was a part-time US mail carrier from 1961-1964. She was also the first police radio dispatcher for the Long Beach Police Department from 1962 through 1971. She operated the Long Beach Laundromat, managed the Super Dollar in Southport and was employed by Mack's Department Store. She worked with Roses' Department Store, from the store's opening on September 6, 1979 until her retirement on January 4, 1996.
A memorial service and celebration of Alice's life will be held February 20, 2010 at New Hope Presbyterian Church, Winnabow, NC at 11:00 A.M with Reverend Robert Haywood officiating. Visitation will follow in the Fellowship Hall of the church.
