--Son of Pvt. Robert Boswell Newell and wife Martha "Patsy" Owens. The Newells lived in Union County, NC in 1860 and in the Sharon community of Mecklenburg County in 1870.
--Occupation: Farm Laborer and Farmer.
--Leander married #1 Margaret "Maggie" Deese about 1872. They lived in the Sharon community. The couple had 6 children: 1. William A., 2. John B., 3. Henry Lee, 4. Thomas James, 5. Maggie Annabell, and 6. Mary Newell. Leander's wife died in the mid 1890s.
--He married #2 Bessie Hefner on Sept. 4, 1897 in Mecklenburg County. They lived in Mecklenburg County in 1900 and in Ft. Mill, SC in 1910. There were 7 children of this marriage: 1. Daisy Lee, 2. Jeanette Lottie, 3. Robert Lee, 4. Sam Patterson, 5. Martha, 6. James Gilmer, and 7. Luther Hand Newell.
--By 1920, widowed, he had moved back to Mecklenburg County.
